The European Union (EU) disbursed this Monday, 22nd, the first 2.3 billion euros to support Ukraine with the country’s financial needs, announced the European Commission.
In a statement, the community executive said that it is the sixth payment made through the EU instrument to support the country that has been trying to defeat an invasion by Russia for almost four years.
Under this mechanism, the European Union has already supported Ukraine with 26.8 billion euros, since March 2024.
In the note released, the European Commission states that the payment of this amount follows several structural reforms that the country is carrying out at a democratic level and in public institutions.
The European Commission will also move a thermal power plant from Lithuania to Ukraine to counter Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
To date, the EU has supported around nine million Ukrainian citizens to meet their energy needs due to the war that began on February 24, 2022.
