‘I am Sophie’: 17-year-old from a small UP city’s Hindi-medium school builds AI robot teacher that can teach any subject

A 17-year-old student from Shiv Charan Inter College in Bulandshahr has made headlines by creating an AI-powered robot teacher, which he named Sophie. The robot, equipped with a large language model (LLM) chipset, is capable of answering questions across various subjects and could act as a substitute teacher when a human instructor is absent.

In a video shared by ANI, Sophie introduces herself: “I am an AI teacher robot. My name is Sophie, and I was invented by Aditya. I teach at Shivcharan Inter-college, Bulandshahr… Yes, I can properly teach students.” The robot answered questions about the world’s tallest building, India’s first president, the first prime minister, and even basic arithmetic like “100 + 92.” Currently, Sophie communicates in Hindi, though plans are underway to add writing capabilities.

How Sophie AI teacher was built

Talking about the creation of Sophie, Aditya Kumar said, “I have used an LLM chipset to build this robot, which is also used by big companies that make robots. It can clear students’ doubts… For now, she can only speak. But we are designing it so it can write as well soon.”

Aditya also highlighted the need for accessible research facilities. “There should be a lab in every district so students can come there and do research,” he said, emphasizing that such resources could help more students innovate like he did.

The young inventor’s AI teacher reflects the growing potential of technology in Indian classrooms. With further development, Sophie could supplement traditional teaching and help bridge gaps in education in schools facing teacher shortages.
