John Robertson, the former Scottish striker who was decisive in winning the two European Cups in 1979 and 1990 with Nottingham Forest, has died at the age of 72, the English club announced this Thursday, December 25th, on social media.
The footballer began and ended his career at Forest interspersed with a spell at rival Derby County, having gone down in Nottingham’s history when in 1979 he crossed for the only goal in the final of what is now known as the Champions League, scored by Trevor Francis in the final against Swedes Malmö. Twelve months later he scored the winning goal (1-0) against Hamburg, at the Bernabéu Stadium, in Madrid.
Robertson was, in practice, one of the main heroes of Nottingham Forest’s great moments of glory, then coached by the mythical Brian Clough.
He represented the Scotland national team in 28 games over five years, including appearances at the 1978 and 1982 World Cups.
“It is with a broken heart that we announce the passing of John Robertson, Nottingham Forest legend and dear friend. A true idol of our club and two-time European Cup winner, John’s unparalleled talent, humility and unwavering devotion to Nottingham Forest will never be forgotten,” read a statement published by the Premier League club on social media.
