The PS proposal to maintain the freeze on higher education fees in 2026/2027 was confirmed this Wednesday, November 26, by the opposition in plenary, while the PSD/CDS proposal to index the value to inflation was rejected.

The PS proposal, which had been approved on the third day of voting in the specialty, was called up for voting in the plenary this morning and approved again with the favorable votes of all benches with the exception of the PSD, CDS and IL.

The initiative of the Government parties, despite the appeals of the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the debate that preceded the vote, was also called and rejected after the vote against Chega, PS, Livre, PCP, BE, PAN and JPP and support from the PSD, CDS and Liberal Initiative benches.

The socialists’ proposal provides that the value of tuition fees “cannot be higher than the value set for the same study cycle in the 2025/2026 academic year”, thus remaining at 697 euros.

The Government intended to unfreeze the value of tuition fees from next year, with an increase to 710 euros in the maximum value for degrees.
