One of the commonplaces of national political terminology in, roughly, the last two decades is that of “caviar left”, a term used to designate, in a sarcastic way, people or groups that claim to be on the Left, preferably in the more “radical” spectrum, but who have allowed themselves to be ensnared by causes increasingly distant from the everyday life of the majority of the population. Basically, “caviar-left” is characterized by that area of the political spectrum that evokes a lot of “the people” in its speech, but seems to have lost an effective connection to their concerns and desires. Basically, it serves to criticize a “left” that has become bourgeoisie and that only maintains a rhetorical proximity to the old proletariat.
Although the Right also does not neglect references to “the people”, it is more common to speak of “citizens” and “citizens’ interests”. In recent years, especially in the so-called “liberal” field, the argument that it is the poorest and most disadvantaged that the State must provide the means to have “freedom of choice” when opting for public or private solutions has become recurrent, in defense of the promotion of private interests in Education and Health.
This Right, which I dare to call the “lupine right” is distinguished in detail from the “caviar left”, of those who imitate the immense care for the best for the country and for the “poor people”, who should be helped not so much with social benefits, but more through little charity. The difference is that, more than keeping your little life far from the common people, the concern that is displayed works like a kind of boomerang. “Freedom of choice” is claimed in areas such as Health or Education, knowing in advance that this will never be a possibility for everyone and that everything is intended to draw a check for itself to the ignoble State to help pay the expense arising from the choice to attend institutions that, especially in the case of Education, are symbols of socio-economic status, with reserved access to a restricted range of surnames and friendships, to which one can add scholarships for some “poor people”, if possible. hand-recruited with the help of some “social sector” organization.
The “lupine right” defends “liberal” measures and criticizes the poor services of the State, in the name of the “disadvantaged” who cannot choose because they do not have the means, but in fact what they want is to make financial contributions for their own cause. The “caviar right”, the legitimate, the gem aristocratic, with secular parchments, even when bankrupt, would never accept this type of opportunistic attitude. The “lupine right” is nothing more than an imposture. It focuses on IL, which occupies part of the PSD in power, except for the CDS, which is dwindling. The “lupine right” defends the “interests of citizens” a lot, except when they decide to go on strikes in defense of their interests because, in these cases, they probably stop being citizens.
